At the very first Rail Yards Market committee meeting I attended, I remember seeing folks I knew and many I didn’t.
You, Me, Us
As the meeting went on, various individuals introduced themselves. Many, if not most, began their introduction with a personal tie-in to the Rail Yards, “I used to play here as a kid,” or “I remember when that used to look like this.”
Personally I am not from Barelas, NM (I am from Queens, NYC) but I can relate to the connection among place and time. I remember regularly visiting the Unisphere in Corona Park, Queens, as a kid. I would run around the globe, imagining I was traveling from country to country on some magnificent kid-journey!
Some wonderful people have come in and shared their personal experiences that are rife with passion and devotion. The Rail Yards space in Barelas, NM means so much to so many. Preserving the space for community-based, community-serving activities is the motivation of many of the volunteers, contributors, and partners.
What’s in it for you?
The Rail Yards Market will offer the visitor an opportunity to view works of art created by local artists. Experience sounds composed by local musicians. Shop for fresh produce grown by local farmers/growers. Consume food from local food vendors. Interact with local artisans. Engage in fun activities for children and adults alike. The benefits to the community of shopping local are well documented.
We have all heard the old axiom, “what you put in is what you get out.” Volunteers are still needed, contributions are still necessary, partnerships are still welcome and donations are still being accepted.
“The Rail Yards Market is focused on building a resilient, sustainable local economy that we all love to work and play in. Through food, art, and music, we hope to bring our community together in an atmosphere of fun, learning, and creativity.” – From Rail Yards Market Website
Now is the time to help build the community that you envision. Contribute a few minutes of your time, a dollar, some pencils: whatever you give will go a long way!
Now, as I leave the planning/programming meetings I immediately think about other community members I can invite to participate and contribute to this community-powered movement.
