The Whole is Greater than the Sum of it’s Parts

The great philosopher Aristotle was quoted as saying, “The Whole is Greater than the Sum of it’s Parts.” After experiencing the opening day (celebrating Cinco de Mayo) of the Rail Yards Market (RYM) in the Barelas neighborhood of Albuquerque, NM, that axiom has been wholeheartedly confirmed by the success of this community-powered event!

Community Circles

The RYM was the bran-child of several folks and of course the idea to reclaim the Rail Yards for a civic use has been proposed many times. Eric Griego, Chad Gruber and Priscilla Garcia stood at the forefront in terms of establishing their respective vision, bringing it forward to the city and gathering together their respective community circles and having those individuals marshal their circles and so on. Much like the Faberge Shampoo Commercial from back in the day!

Community of Folks from all Walks of Life

Opening Day at Rail Yards Market

From it’s inception, the Rail Yards Market welcomed folks from all walks of life. Open invitations were sent to the community at-large: from Artists to doodler; from newborns to our community of elders, from food vendors to foodies, all our welcome. The RYM includes educational zones where spectators can be exposed to and learn from educators in every field imaginable.

Children’s Zone

Community Publishing, along with local Artist Vanessa Martinez, was invited to plan and participate in the programming at the Children’s Zone. We have many exciting activities planned and many community partners who will be contributing their talents and resources to the Children’s Zone.

Digital Storytelling Princess Marisol & the Moon Thieves

The featured story for opening day was Princess Marisol & the Moon Thieves. This bilingual multimedia eBook, which was written by yours truly, Illustrated by Audrey McNamara, Narrated by Jackie Zamora with Music by Matias Pizarro and Juan Ramirez (contributions by Christian Orellana) is being adapted for the stage by FUSION Theatre Company for an Albuquerque run in late June and July (click here for details).

The opening day was a heart-warming event. I have rarely enjoyed myself so much. I’m a 60-year-old biker and found myself as welcome as the young 20, 30 and 40 somethings. People from all walks of life truly visited. I can attest to that. It was great.

Thanks to all who made it happen. I chipped in my little $10 but I know the boots on the ground people are the heroes. I will be back again and again. The RYM may turn out to be one of the most precious resources in ABQ. Congrats to all involved.

Thanks Al! As you know the volunteer hours for this event are countless including meeting/programming hours. All of the volunteers deserve a big, continuous cheer for their efforts! The success of the market is testament to true Community-Power! Thank you for participating!
