Mother’s Day at the Market

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of Mother’s Day and many might wonder how this holiday came to be. For myself, like many others, I owe my life to my mom (literally and figuratively) and the desire to celebrate her is something I strive to do on a daily basis. That same sense of pride drove Anna Jarvis to celebrate the work of her mother, Ann Reese Jarvis. Ann Reese Jarvis, was a peace activist who had cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. After years of lobbying by Anna Jarvis, President Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation thereby creating Mother’s Day as an official holiday in 1914.

Mother’s Day around the World

mothers day spanishMother’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, on the second Sunday of May and some countries celebrate it on an entirely different day. In Spain for example Mother’s Day in celebrated on December 8. In many parts of the world, the holiday is tied into a religious festival and is celebrated in that fashion. For example in many parts of Mexico, parishioners attend a Mother’s Day Evening Mass where the orchestra plays “Las Mañanitas.” In the morning Mexican moms eat tamales and atole prepared by their children.
